Worth the Wait

“Wait for it.”

Her eyes were blindfolded and she felt as if she were being led into some deep, dark cave full of monsters. Or at least that’s how she felt on the inside.  She was more nervous than she thought she would be at being completely out of control. It was at this moment that she realized that she hated surprises.

And she hated waiting. That is, she hated waiting on other people.

He had driven her around in the car and was directed over an uneven path to a place where she had to pause a moment while he opened a doorway or entrance of some sort and then ushered into a place that seemed to be a little steamy. Or that may have been the nervous flop sweat vibe she was sure she was giving off.  Geez, she felt like a pig at this moment, with the nerves and all.

It’s not like this was such a big deal.  He was just trying to cheer her up because she was in a mood.  She’d been a mood ever since she knew him, but he kept trying to break down her defenses.

Well, he would have to wait a long, long time for her walls to come down.

He knew what it was, they were just friends, with absolutely no benefits.  She was not trying to get attached.  Her heart was locked away in a box, buried deep in the sand and it was never going to see the light of day again.

Even though it was only a few minutes, it seemed like hours that she had to wait for him to reveal what the hell was up.  She thought about, and tried very hard to get mad.  Just as she was about to cuss him out, again, he came up behind her, slowly untying the blindfold and sending shivers down her spine.

“Stop breathing down my neck!”

She could sense his smile.

“Shut the hell up and enjoy.”

His voice in her ear gave her unwanted sensations, but she chalked it up to nerves.  She was never going to give up control like this again. It had her all off balance.

As the blindfold came off, she blinked into the bright light.  She looked around.

They were in the middle of Nighthawk Breakfast Bar, and they were alone.

“What the…”

“The other day you said you wanted a Boozy Float but were too lazy to come all the way out to Venice Beach to get it. I decided to get you off your ass.”

His smile was doing things to her at the moment.  Things she did not want to happen.

“But why are we alone?”

That’s when she saw one waitress as he pointed to a table.  She reluctantly sat down.

“I know the owner, he did me a favor.”

She knew he’d done more than ask a favor.

“But wait…”

“That’s your problem.  You’re ALWAYS waiting.  Waiting for when you are ready for things to happen.  So you can control them.”

“Some things are worth waiting for.” She challenged him, trying to be self-righteous.

She hated him at that moment.  Hated the way he was making her feel.  That she was feeling.

He just chuckled and shook his head.

“You right tho, as he picked up the menu.  You right.”  He sighed.  “And some people are, too.”  He winked at her and signal to the waitress, who had retreated back to the bar across the room.

All she could do was pretend that she was cool as she looked at the menu.

She snuck a peek at him as he ordered his food.
