“Carpe Diem! Seize the day negro!”
“Share some more stupid platitudes, will you?” She rolled her eyes as she ate.
“A platter of what? I thought you ordered Drunken French Toast?” He raised his eyebrow as he smirked at her. He was cute as hell and she couldn’t stand it.
“Relax. I know what a platitude is.” He sighs as he leaned back in his chair at the Nighthawk, watching her. But sometimes they are not just sayings. Like ‘No regrets’ for example.”
She cocked her head because she didn’t know where this was going.
“What are you babbling about?”
“You’re cute.” He waited for her to blush. When she did, he continued.
“What I mean is that in addition to waiting, you seem to be living life so carefully so you won’t have any regrets. You always say that I’m a regret waiting to happen.”
It was her turn to sigh.
“That’s not what I meant. I can’t explain it. It’s just… ” She shook her head. He would never understand.
“Look. I know regrets. You don’t know regrets.” She couldn’t look at him.
He had to lean forward to hear what she said next.
“I’ve done things that you wouldn’t believe. I’m not as innocent as I look. Maybe what I should have said to you is that I’m a regret waiting to happen.”
She looked up and the tears in her eyes threatened to spill.
“No, regrets are for people who don’t know what life really is. Life is about making mistakes and learning from them. No regrets for something that made you a better person.”
His hand over hers on the table made her feel warm. The ocean in her ears got louder as she contemplated pulling her hand away or letting him shelter it.
Which choice would she regret more?
